How to Prepare for Your In-Home Newborn Photography Session
How to Prepare for Your In-Home Newborn Photography Session
Your Complete Newborn Photoshoot Preparation Guide | Newborn Glow Photography
Beautiful newborn memories, captured in the comfort of your own home.
Welcoming a newborn into your family is one of life’s most beautiful and emotional experiences. Those tiny fingers, sleepy smiles, delicate eyelashes, and sweet little expressions change so quickly.
At Newborn Glow Photography, my goal is to capture these precious details while making the entire experience as comfortable, relaxed, and stress-free as possible.
One of the biggest advantages of an in-home newborn photography session is that you don’t have to pack up your baby, travel to a studio, or worry about forgetting something important.
I bring my portable newborn photography studio directly to your home, including professional lighting, newborn outfits, wraps, blankets, and photography props.
To help you feel confident and prepared, I’ve put together this detailed guide covering everything you need to know before your session.
1. When Is the Best Time for Newborn Photos?
For traditional sleepy newborn portraits, I generally recommend scheduling your session when your baby is 5–14 days old.
During these first two weeks, babies often sleep for longer stretches and may be more comfortable in the gently curled positions associated with newborn photography.
However, every baby is different!
If your baby is older than two weeks, don’t worry. Beautiful newborn photographs are still possible. We may simply adjust the poses and setups to suit your baby’s age, comfort, and development.
My recommendation: Book your session before your due date whenever possible. Once your baby arrives, we can confirm the final date based on your baby’s arrival and your family’s needs.
2. How to Prepare Your Baby Before the Session
A comfortable, well-fed baby makes a wonderful difference during a newborn photography session.
Here are a few simple things you can do to help everything go smoothly.
Try to Keep Your Baby Awake Before the Session
If your baby is comfortable and naturally awake, a little interaction during the 30–60 minutes before our session may help them settle into a deeper sleep afterward.
You can try:
Gentle talking and cuddling
A diaper change
A little supervised interaction
A warm bath, if that’s already part of your routine
There is no need to force your baby to stay awake or interrupt their normal sleep schedule.
Important: Your baby’s comfort always comes first. If your newborn needs to sleep, let them sleep!
Feed Your Baby Before We Begin
A full, content baby is often more relaxed and comfortable during photography.
If possible, plan a feeding shortly before our session begins.
However, please don’t delay feeding a hungry baby just to match our photography schedule.
We’ll always make time for feeding whenever your baby needs it.
Breastfeeding, bottle-feeding, burping, and cuddling breaks are completely normal during newborn photography sessions.
Choose Comfortable, Easy-to-Remove Clothing
Before I arrive, dress your baby in something soft and simple that can be removed without too much disturbance.
A loose-fitting, zip-up sleeper is a great choice.
If possible, avoid:
Tight socks that leave marks around the ankles
Tight waistbands
Clothing with complicated buttons
Multiple layers that are difficult to remove
Don’t worry about choosing special newborn outfits. I’ll bring a selection of beautiful wraps, outfits, blankets, and accessories for the baby-only portraits.
Prepare a Few Baby Essentials
Please keep these items nearby:
Extra diapers and wipes
Burp cloths
A pacifier, if your baby uses one
Bottles or feeding supplies, if applicable
An extra baby outfit
A soft blanket for cuddling
Accidents happen, and that’s completely okay!
3. Preparing Your Home for the Photoshoot
One of the most common concerns parents have is whether their home is suitable for professional newborn photography.
The answer is yes! You do not need a large house, a beautifully decorated nursery, or a perfectly clean home.
I bring professional photography equipment and create a comfortable shooting space in your home.
How Much Space Do I Need?
A small open area in your living room, bedroom, or another convenient space is usually enough for newborn portraits.
Before I arrive, it would be helpful if you could:
Move a coffee table or small furniture out of the way if needed
Clear an area where I can set up my photography equipment
Keep the photography area free of unnecessary clutter
Make sure there’s access to an electrical outlet
I’ll help determine the best location for the setup when I arrive.
What About Natural Light?
Natural light can create beautiful, soft photographs, but it isn’t required.
I bring professional portable lighting equipment to every session.
Even if it’s cloudy outside or your home doesn’t have large windows, we can still create beautiful newborn portraits.
Preparing the Room Temperature
Newborn babies can become chilly when they’re being changed or photographed without clothing.
For the baby-only portion of the session, I recommend having the room comfortably warm, generally around 75–80°F (24–27°C), when appropriate.
We can adjust the temperature based on your baby’s comfort, clothing, and the conditions in the room.
A warmer environment can help your baby feel more comfortable during outfit changes and wrapped newborn portraits.
We will always monitor your baby’s comfort and avoid overheating.
Preparing for Family Portraits
For family portraits, a simple, uncluttered background works beautifully.
Good locations often include:
A neutral-colored living room wall
A bright bedroom
A comfortable sofa
A simple area near a window
You don’t need to rearrange your entire home or buy special decorations.
Sometimes the simplest backgrounds create the most beautiful, timeless family photographs.
4. What Should Your Family Wear for Newborn Photos?
Choosing outfits for family photographs doesn’t need to be complicated.
The most important rule is:
Coordinate your outfits rather than matching everyone exactly.
Soft, neutral colors photograph beautifully and help keep attention on your family’s faces, emotions, and connection with your newborn.
My Favorite Colors for Family Photos
I recommend choosing from the following color palette:
Warm neutrals:
Ivory
Cream
Beige
Oatmeal
Taupe
Soft brown
Soft, muted colors:
Dusty blue
Sage green
Dusty rose
Blush pink
Light gray
Muted lavender
You can mix two or three coordinating colors throughout the family for a natural, polished look.
What Colors and Patterns Should You Avoid?
For a timeless, elegant appearance, I recommend avoiding:
Neon or extremely bright colors
Large logos and brand names
Graphic T-shirts
Busy prints and large patterns
Very shiny or reflective fabrics
Strongly contrasting outfits that draw attention away from the baby
Simple clothing generally creates the most beautiful results.
Outfit Ideas for Moms
For mothers, I recommend comfortable clothing that makes you feel beautiful and confident.
Great options include:
A flowing cream or beige dress
A simple neutral-colored blouse
A soft knit sweater
A comfortable maxi dress
A simple, elegant outfit in pastel tones
Soft, flowing fabrics can photograph beautifully and create a gentle, feminine look.
Please don’t feel pressure to wear anything fitted or uncomfortable.
You have just welcomed a baby into the world. Your comfort matters more than any outfit.
Outfit Ideas for Dads
For fathers, simple and classic outfits work best.
Some great choices include:
A plain cream or white shirt
A neutral knit sweater
A solid-color polo
A light blue or beige button-down shirt
Neutral chinos or simple trousers
I recommend avoiding large logos, graphic prints, and athletic clothing when possible.
What Should Siblings Wear?
If older brothers or sisters are participating, choose soft, comfortable outfits that coordinate with the parents.
For girls:
A simple cream or pastel dress
A soft knit outfit
A neutral blouse with a skirt
For boys:
A plain shirt or polo
A soft sweater
Beige, gray, or neutral trousers
Comfort is especially important for younger children.
We want them to feel relaxed and enjoy being part of the experience.
What Should Grandparents Wear?
Grandparents are always welcome to participate in family portraits when included in your selected photography package.
For extended family photographs, I recommend keeping everyone within a similar color palette.
For example:
Mom: Ivory dress
Dad: Beige shirt and neutral trousers
Grandma: Soft blush or cream blouse
Grandpa: Light blue or taupe shirt
Older sibling: Soft beige or cream outfit
This combination creates a beautifully coordinated family portrait without making everyone look identical.
Helpful tip: Before your session, lay everyone’s outfits together on a bed to see how the colors look next to each other.
5. Preparing for Photos with Siblings
Photographing newborns with older siblings can create some of the most meaningful images from your session.
However, young children don’t always want to cooperate with a photographer, and that’s completely normal.
A few things can help:
Make sure your older child has eaten before the session
Dress them in comfortable clothing
Avoid putting too much pressure on them to smile or pose
Let them take breaks if needed
Have a favorite quiet toy or small snack available
I generally recommend photographing siblings and the entire family near the beginning of the session, while everyone is fresh and ready.
Once the family portraits are finished, older siblings can return to their normal activities.
There’s no need for them to stay in the photography area during the entire session.
6. What Happens During the Photography Session?
Every baby is different, so I keep the session flexible and follow your baby’s needs.
For packages that include family portraits, I typically begin with the family photographs.
This allows parents, siblings, and grandparents to finish their portraits first and relax afterward.
Then we move on to the individual newborn portraits.
Depending on your selected package, I may photograph your baby using different:
Wraps and blankets
Newborn outfits
Backgrounds
Props and accessories
Comfortable, age-appropriate poses
I take my time with posing and transitions, always prioritizing your baby’s safety and comfort.
Your baby is always in charge of the pace!
If your baby needs feeding, changing, cuddling, or simply a little break, we stop and take care of them.
Some babies sleep through almost the entire session. Others need more time and attention.
Both situations are completely normal.
For certain poses, I may ask a parent to remain close or help support the baby. Not every pose is appropriate for every newborn, and I will never force an uncomfortable position.
7. What If My Baby Cries or Won’t Sleep?
Please don’t worry!
One of the biggest misconceptions about newborn photography is that babies must sleep throughout the session.
While sleeping babies allow us to capture certain classic newborn poses, awake baby photographs can be just as beautiful.
Sometimes an open-eyed portrait becomes a parent’s favorite image!
Crying, feeding, diaper changes, and needing to be held are all normal newborn behaviors.
I expect these moments and plan for flexibility.
You don’t need to apologize if your baby cries.
My goal is to make the experience calm and comfortable, not rushed or stressful.
8. Do You Need to Buy Any Props or Outfits?
No!
For traditional newborn portraits, I bring a selection of photography accessories, including:
Newborn wraps
Baby outfits
Soft blankets
Photography backgrounds
Selected newborn props and accessories
You are also welcome to include a meaningful personal item, such as a special blanket, a handmade gift, or a family keepsake.
Please let me know in advance if there’s something specific you’d like to incorporate so we can discuss how to include it safely.
For family portraits, you only need to prepare your own clothing.
9. Additional Tips for Parents
Here are a few more ways to help your photoshoot go smoothly.
Get Yourself Ready First
If you’re participating in family portraits, try to have your outfit, hair, and makeup ready before the session begins.
That way, once I arrive, we can focus on the baby and photography.
Keep Your Home Relaxed
You don’t need complete silence during the session.
Normal household sounds are generally fine, and some babies actually find gentle background noise comforting.
Don’t Worry About Perfect Hair or Makeup
Professional family photography is about capturing your relationships and the love you share.
You don’t need to look like a magazine model.
The most meaningful photographs often come from genuine smiles, cuddles, and small, natural moments.
Relax and Enjoy the Experience
There is nothing more beautiful than the connection between a newborn and their family.
I’ll guide you through the family portraits, help with positioning, and make sure everyone feels comfortable in front of the camera.
You don’t need previous photography experience or any special posing skills.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to clean my entire house?
Absolutely not! I only need a small area to set up my equipment and a suitable spot for family photographs. Your home does not need to be perfect.
What if my home doesn’t have good lighting?
No problem! I bring professional portable lighting, so we don’t have to depend entirely on natural light.
Can grandparents participate in the photoshoot?
Yes! Grandparents and other family members are welcome to participate when family portraits are included in your photography package. Please let me know approximately how many people will be joining us.
What if my baby needs to eat during the session?
We simply take a break. Your baby’s feeding schedule and comfort always come first.
Can we use our own baby outfits or special blankets?
Of course! You’re welcome to include personal items or meaningful keepsakes. Please mention them before the session so we can plan accordingly.
What if my baby doesn’t fall asleep?
That’s perfectly okay. We can capture beautiful awake portraits and adjust our approach based on your baby’s comfort.
How long will the newborn photoshoot take?
Session length depends on your selected package, the number of setups, family participation, and your baby’s needs. Some sessions are short and simple, while more detailed newborn sessions require additional time.
